If you’ve ever dreamed of saying “I do” in your parents’ garden, on a beautiful beach, on a boat, in a woodland clearing or at the pub where you met, then your dream could soon become a reality. The Government has launched a public consultation on the biggest reform of wedding law in almost 200 years. If the proposals become law, the focus would move away from licensed venues and instead onto authorised celebrants. In simple terms, that could mean you choose the place… and the celebrant makes your marriage legal. What does that mean?

At the moment, if you want a legally recognised marriage in England or Wales, you generally have to marry in a licensed venue or register office. That’s why many couples currently have: a legal ceremony at a register office, followed by

a separate celebrant-led ceremony somewhere meaningful

or get married in a church – but what if you’re not religious? The proposed changes could remove the need for two ceremonies, giving couples far more freedom to marry in places that truly reflect their personalities and their story. Imagine getting married…

At a venue that isn’t currently licensed for weddings.

As an independent celebrant, I’ve always believed your ceremony should be about you – not about fitting into rules that were written generations ago. Every couple deserves the freedom to create a ceremony that reflects their personalities, their families and their love story. These proposals move us one step closer to making that possible. Nothing has changed just yet; the Government is asking for views before any new law is introduced, but it’s an incredibly exciting moment for couples, celebrants and the wedding industry alike.
